ASCII vs. UTF-8

ASCII defines 128 characters. UTF-8 keeps those same 128 byte values and adds multi-byte sequences for everything else, so for plain English text the two give identical hex. This page defaults to ASCII and tells you when a character falls outside it; the encoding menu switches to UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252 when you need them. For the general tool see hex to text.

Questions people ask

How do I convert hex to ASCII?

Split the hex into two-digit pairs, convert each pair to decimal and look it up in the ASCII table. 48 = 72 = “H”, 69 = 105 = “i”. So 48 69 reads “Hi”.

What is 41 in ASCII?

Hex 41 is decimal 65, which is capital “A”. Hex 61 is lowercase “a”.

Why do some bytes show as ?

ASCII only defines 00–7F. Bytes 80–FF belong to some other encoding. Choose UTF-8 (most modern text) or Windows-1252 (older Windows files) in the encoding menu.

How do you say “I love you” in hex?

In ASCII hex it is 49 20 6C 6F 76 65 20 79 6F 75.

What are 32 hex characters?

A 32-character hex string is 16 bytes. That is the length of an MD5 hash or a UUID without dashes, which are not text and won’t decode to readable ASCII.
