ASCII vs. UTF-8
ASCII defines 128 characters. UTF-8 keeps those same 128 byte values and adds multi-byte sequences for everything else, so for plain English text the two give identical binary. This page defaults to ASCII and tells you when a character falls outside it; the encoding menu switches to UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252 when you need them. For the general tool see text to binary.

Questions people ask
How do I convert ASCII to binary?
Look up each character’s ASCII code and write it in base 2 using 8 digits. “B” = 66 = 64 + 2 = 01000010.
What is “hi” in binary?
01101000 01101001.
Why do all ASCII bytes start with 0?
ASCII codes go up to 127, which needs only 7 bits, so the eighth (leftmost) bit of every ASCII byte is 0.
How do I write a name in binary?
Type it in the box above. Uppercase letters start 010, lowercase 011, and the last five bits count the letter’s position in the alphabet. See the binary alphabet.
